Question asked: Seems this particular design is superior to many others in a number of ways and has high demand. The only thing I can imagine for discontinuing it is the level of work required to cut the decorative shapes into the surface. Was there a different impediment to its continued production? If not, why not just manufacture the same style with less artistic detail?
